INTERIOR DESIGNER
MIA SANDMARK
Mia is a Swedish-born designer based in Sonoma, California. Raised between the wildflower meadows of Örsundsbro and the sun-soaked charm of the Bay Area, her creative life began in the spaces between cultures, landscapes, and forms of expression. Childhood memories of building miniature homes from shoeboxes, pinecones, and fabric scraps gave shape to an early love of atmosphere and detail. Summers spent between Sweden and California offered contrast and inspiration, a mix of simplicity and vibrancy, stillness and movement that continues to inform her design philosophy.
Her path has never followed a single line. Mia explored fashion, travel, teaching, styling, and set design before finding her way to interiors. She studied fashion at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Southern California, then spent her twenties living throughout California and backpacking through Europe, always drawn to the environments people create around themselves. In Stockholm, she worked in film production, wardrobe, and home staging, and began to see interiors not just as a backdrop, but as a source of identity and belonging. She returned to Sonoma in 2017 and founded Mia Sandmark Design.
Today, Mia leads every project with equal parts creativity and intention. She believes interiors should be both beautiful and usable, spaces where family and friends gather, where memories unfold, and where something unexpected quietly invites delight. Influenced by both Scandinavian and Californian sensibilities, her work is grounded in natural materials, thoughtful restraint, and a deep understanding of how people live.
She works closely with a small, expert team including her husband Gustaf, who brings technical precision and structural insight to the studio’s planning and execution. Together, they offer a boutique and highly personalized design experience built on trust, creativity, and care. Every space is shaped by its surroundings, layered with intention, and designed to feel like home from the moment you step inside.
A SUSTAINABLE TRADITION
“I am drawn to the quiet longevity of Scandinavian design, where simplicity meets depth and every material has purpose. I choose wood, linen, wool, leather, and metal not only for their beauty but for their integrity. These natural elements carry history, soften with time, and invite a more grounded and intentional way of living. They create spaces that are lasting, personal, and deeply rooted in both sustainability and soul.”
